Primary and Secondary Continuing Programs
High levels of poverty have seen many people in the rural areas unable to complete their primary and secondary school education. This compounded by the loss of parents though HIV/AIDS has resulted in a large number of school going children dropping out of school. Our studies indicate that given the opportunity many would like to study independently and sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education national examination as private candidates.
Ukamba having recognized the importance of the national examination certificates will work with the communities and local education institutions to assist those individuals desiring to take the national examinations to do so.
Literacy and Numeracy Programs
According the World Bank 2002 finding on its "Skills and Literacy Training for Better Livelihoods" study, literacy and numeracy are essential for workers to increase their productivity and income, especially as a means of poverty alleviation. This is especially true for the rural farmers and entrepreneurs, who without literacy and numeracy cannot read market information, market their products and are challenged in understanding the financial status of their businesses.
The Adult Literacy program will offer literacy and numeracy training for those adults who are willing to learn. The school realizes the importance of adult literacy in increasing productivity. Ukamba will work in collaboration with the government and donors to provide this program for those members of the community who are interested.
